I’m writing a book. It’s going to be called Marketing With No Budget. Or something like that. I’m writing it with Steven Skyles-Mulligan.
Steven and I were introduced by a mutual friend a few weeks ago and we discovered that we pretty much do the same thing. Steven’s a really nice guy. More importantly, we think about marketing the same way. We could have easily become frenemies. You know, those friendly competitors vying for the same business. Instead, we decided to: 1. Collaborate on a book. 2. Hold each other accountable for writing our book and our blogs. (See how well that worked?)
I think the book will be of great value. I meet so many people, especially start ups, who don’t really have any money for marketing. After working for years with Fortune 500 companies with huge budgets, I can tell you that good marketing doesn’t need a lot of money. It just needs a really targeted strategy.
For the financially challenged, marketing can be a simple trade-off between legwork and money. For example, a proper strategic networking plan can take a business very far. Yet I find a lot of people don’t know the difference between networking and selling. As long as you are going to be out there meeting people, make sure they’re the right people. And here’s the news….that’s not necessarily potential clients. Or take Social Media. You can hire someone to do your Social Media for you. Or you can spend the time to do it yourself. Either way, you need a strategy. Because it’s hard to make an impact with a bunch of random tweets.
So here I am, trying to think of a cute little close for this. Perhaps it’s about the importance of being open to the possibilities. If I weren’t open to meeting Steven, you wouldn’t be reading this. And if you think you can’t do marketing because you have no budget, well, call me and I can show you how.
